Martin was born in Loma Linda, California. In 1965, Martin joined the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served and fought for his country during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Martin Padilla was preceded in death by his parents, Julia I. Rodriguez and Mauricio Padilla, and siblings, Robert Islas and Lizzie Anne Arguello. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Ann Padilla; children Eric Padilla (Aileen), Yvette Valdez, Evelyn Barrientes (Rene), Martin Padilla Jr. (Lysandra), and Dani Rae Vidal (Javier); grandchildren Zakaree, Desiree, Eric Jr., Sylena, America, Jayson, Raelyn, Alejandro, Camila, Karina, Santiago, Joanna, and Ava Grace; sisters Marsi and Irene Padilla and numerous nieces and nephews.
